Renting a scooter is the best decision you'll make on Paros. The island is 25km long, the roads are mostly in good condition, and nearly every beach, village and viewpoint is within 30 minutes of the port. A full circuit of the island covers around 70km and can be done comfortably in a day — with time for swimming, lunch and exploring along the way.
Renting a Scooter
Scooter rental agencies are clustered around the Parikia ferry port and in Naoussa. Expect to pay €15–22 per day for a 50cc scooter, or €20–28 for a larger 125cc. The 125cc is more comfortable on the steeper inland roads and easier if you're two people with bags. You'll need an EU driving licence (or international equivalent) and will typically leave a deposit or a copy of your passport. Helmets are provided — wear them; the roads can be narrow and traffic unpredictable in high season.
The North Loop (Half Day)
From Parikia, take the coastal road north towards Naoussa (12km). The road climbs gently through scrubby hills with glimpses of the sea before descending into the village. From Naoussa, the road winds along the coastline to Kolymbithres — a bay of extraordinary granite rock formations — then continues east to Santa Maria and the Monastiri nature reserve. Allow 3–4 hours including swimming and lunch in Naoussa.
The South Loop (Half Day)
Head south from Parikia through Pounta (where the Antiparos ferry departs) and continue to Alyki, a sheltered bay with a small harbour and good fish restaurants. Continue east along the southern coast to Drios — a calm, shallow beach popular with families — then turn north on the inland road to Golden Beach (Chryssi Akti), Paros' most famous beach and the site of the annual windsurfing championships. Return via the east coast through Piso Livadi, a quiet port village with good swimming.
The Full Island Circuit
Combine both loops for a complete circuit, starting and finishing in Parikia. The total distance is around 70km. Stop for coffee in Naoussa, swim at Kolymbithres, have lunch in Lefkes (the mountain road is one of the most beautiful on the island), swim again at Golden Beach, and return along the south coast. A full day, very satisfying.
Start early — by 10am the roads into Naoussa and Kolymbithres are noticeably busier. Fill up with petrol in Parikia before heading out; fuel stations are sparse outside the main towns. The mountain road through Lefkes can be steep — if you're on a 50cc and it's two-up, take it slowly. Always park in the shade and take your helmet with you — theft is rare but sunburn isn't. The road between Naoussa and Kolymbithres is narrow in places; let buses pass.
Day Trip from Antiparos
From Antiparos Houses, you can take the 7-minute ferry to Pounta on Paros, rent a scooter from the agencies there or ride up to Parikia (6km), and have a full day exploring the island before returning in the evening. We recommend doing this mid-week in high season when the ferry is less crowded.
